Your cholesterol serum should be between 125-200. Some organizations say that the lower the number, less than 185mg/dl, is even better and you have less of a chance for heart disease. Anything slightly over 200 is considered high and you may be at risk for heart disease. Even higher than that, and your chances of heart disease is greater.

Your LDL cholesterol should be below 130 mg/dL. Ideally this number should be low. Your HDL cholesterol should be at least 50 mg/dL. For HDL, higher is better. The sum of your LDL and HDL cholesterol should be below 200 milligrams per deciliter. Your triglycerides should be below 150 mg/dL.

For your LDL (bad) cholesterol, it should be less than 150 mg/dL to be optimal. For the HDL (good) cholesterol, your number should be 50 mg/dL and up if you're a woman, and 40 mg/dL and up if you're a man. Any lower and you're at risk for heart disease.

There are two forms of cholesterol LDL (low density lipoproteins) and HDL (high density lipoproteins). The normal numbers for LDL is 100 through 129 mg. The normal numbers for HDL is 40 throught 60 mg. The lower the number for HDL might be heart disease. The higher the number for LDL the better.

Most doctors say cholesterol at 200 and below is good. If it's too high, diet or medication can bring the number down.
