Colitis is a general term meaning inflammation of the colon, or large intestine. There are many forms, including ischemic (poor blood flow), infectious, and ulcerative. The term "colitis" by itself usually refers to ulcerative colitis, a condition that includes diarrhea which is often bloody, and abdominal pain. Ulcerative colitis is relapsing and remitting, meaning it comes and goes.

Colitis is a general term that refers to inflammation in the large colon. The cause of inflammation is not indicated by this term and there are several possible etiologies. For example, ischemic colitis is inflammation secondary to decreased blood flow. The decreased blood flow itself also has multiple possible causes.
