Colestipol HCL is a cholesterol medication. This medication works to lower your cholesterol levels by attaching to cholesterol that you ingest through food and forming an insoluble, non-digestable complex that you excrete. By not absorbing as much cholesterol in your diet this way, your cholesterol level will eventually get lower.

I take Colestipol HCL as a bile sequester since I have no gallbladder. If you have digestive issues from having your GB removed, then Colestipol will give you your life back. One a day is all it takes.

Colestipol HCL is prescribed for patients with high cholesterol levels. The medication combines with bile acids, which contribute to the formation of bad cholesterol, and renders the bile acids incapable of forming cholesterol. Colestipol HCL is also prescribed for patients with biliary blockage and those who have intestinal issues (diarrhea) due to bile acids.

Colestipol HCL is used to bring down the LDL cholesterol levels in people who are at high risk of heart disease or stroke. It's used in patients who don't respond to a change in diet, and it has no effect on triglyceride levels.

Colestipol is a medication prescribed for individuals with the genetically inherited disease known as familial hypercholesterolemia, or excessively high cholesterol. This medication is not without its' side effects, which limit its use to only those with this very severe, malignant form of hypercholestrolemia. Muscle pain and weakness as well as cramping have been reported with this medication.

I have just been prescribed colestipol to bind C. difficile toxins in my bowel following a four-day hospitalization for C. diff colitis. This is my first (and hopefully only) experience with the infection.
