A civil summons is the instrument which requires the defendant(s) to appear and answer the Complaint. While the filing of the Complaint initiates the civil lawsuit, you must serve the Complaint, along with the civil summons, in a manner accepted in your jurisdiction. Failure to do so may result in a dismissal.

A civil summons is an order by the court for a person to appear in a non-criminal matter. It can be as a party to a civil action (such as divorce or litigation) or as a witness for one of the parties. Either way it is a court order and you have a legal responsibility to respond as directed.
