The brown spots may be a sign of venous insufficiency. There are one-way valves in your veins that assist venous blood back to the lungs for re-oxygenation. These valves may become defective with age, obesity, or elevated circulatory pressures. Some of the venous blood or 'spent'red blood cells are forced back into the extracellular space resultng in the brown spots.

I would probably say aging. You are getting older and skin development weakens. Also aging skin I see is caused not by the passage of time and chronological aging, but from the sun. So it is best to limit your self from the sun for a long period of time.

This is caused by hyperpigmentation due to deficient or over productivity of melanin from sun damage, or it could also be linked with some diseases such as Addison's or Cushing's disease which may affect hormone production. A proper consultation with a physician, specifically a dermatologist can help you identify what specifically causes this discoloration.

The most common cause is simple vasculare insufficiency, mainly realted to varicose veins and the incompetent valves that go along with them. Other causes can be dermatitis or even liver spots. I suggest that you see your family doctor and have them look at it and maybe you can get some simple treatment.

It could well be a sign of aging. However, if it is getting bigger, cause bleeding or becoming darker in color you should seek doctor attention to exclude anything sinister.
