If the grinding sound is non-metalic, check your tires for clearance in the wheel wells. Also check to see if anything is dragging.

Check underneath your car. Many times a plastic 'splash shield' can be torn, and will drag on the road. Worn suspension bushings can also cause this noise.

The most likley answer would be your brakes. The noise occurs when the thin brake pad starts to scrape against the brake drum.

The most likely case is that there is something caught under your car that is dragging along the ground, or you have a loose, low hanging muffler.

Check under the car. After an unexpected sharp turn or sudden bump something may have become lodged under the car or a piece of the car has come loose.
