What is "breakthrough pain"?

Breakthrough pain comes suddenly for short period of time and is not alleviated by the patients normal pain supression management. it is common in cancer patient who commonly have background level of pain.

Beakthrough pain is usually short and sudden and occurs when a patient is on medication. The pain is so great that the pain medication can not handle it. This is usually an extreme circumstance. Stronger medication may be required if a patient is experiencing breakthrough pain. This will prevent extreme pain occurrences.
