What is "brand differentiation"?

It sounds like a bunch of "corporate speak" to me.

It's an attempt by manufacturers to get you to see thier product as different than anothers. Take laundry detergent... they're all pretty much the same, but Tide wants you to see thier brand as better than say Fab. They need to make thier product different enough to get you interested in buying thier product instead of the other.

In the advertising and marketing world, brand differentiation is what makes one brand stand out from another. Brand differentiation becomes important when you have very similar items, such as Coke and Pepsi. Determining what makes one stand out from the other tells advertisers how to market the product to you.
