Ascites is a collection of fluid in the abdominal cavity, normally associated with decompensated liver disease and portal vein hypertension. It is not fatal, but is very uncomfortable. The fluid can become infected and may require draining, which also carries a risk of infection. It is treated with a low-sodium diet, fluid restriction, and possibly diuretics.

Ascites is the abnormal collection of fluid in the abdominal cavity. It may, for example, be caused by liver disease, malnutrition, or heart disease. It is not generally fatal.
