What is an acceptable amount of personal phone calls while at work?

Necessary phone calls at work are acceptable, most importantly for kid-related emergencies or calling to see if the child came home from school. There might also be an important call made to a spouse, but it should not be frivolous. Therefore, I would say that 3 personal phone calls a day at work is reasonable.

Some companies do not allow any personal phone calls at work but most will tolerate one or two per day as long as they are not more than a few minutes. It is most important to limit the time of the call.

Personal phone calls at work should be limited to two per day. However,these personal calls should not be for more than a few minutes each, but no more than five.

It depends on the company. In general, you shouldn't make any long distance calls from work, and you shouldn't make calls while you have work to be done. Making calls on your break, or while you're waiting for assignments to come in, shouldn't be a problem in most places. Check with your boss, though.
