An L-Tyrosine is a form of amino acid that is not generally required to be healthy. A Tyrosine (or L-Tyrosine) supplement is a supplement to increase alertness and mental arousal. They help you respond and increase your over-all alertness level which helps to increase your focus. However, there are side-effects. Some side-effects include: restlessness, insomnia, anxiety, and heart palpitations.

Builds up proteins in your body, increases energy and speeds up metabolism. Side effects are only evident when taken in excess amounts.

Tyrosine is an amino acid, but it is not one of the essential amino acids (ones that you have to consume because your body cannot manufacture it). Some people think tyrosine increases alertness or fights depression, but his has not been medically proven. See a doctor before starting supplementation.
