The term "split Orchid" Refers to an Orchid stem that has been split down the middle. Usually this is a cause of a mineral deficiency. The stem becomes brittle and splits much like our hair when we dont get the right nutrients. This can usually be fixed by adding some Orchid specific fertilizer and lose garden ties.

A split orchid is one that has been propagated by sending out another plant through a rhizome. When the orchid is readily seen from the mother plant it can be taken off and put into it's own pot. This is a popular way of propagating orchids as it maintains the original strain.

Some orchids can be propagated by splitting their root systems. Some orchids grow from tubers or other similar underground root system. Tubers, which are potato like root systems, for some plants can be divided. Thus a split orchid is really a reference to a splittable root system for an orchid.

"Splitting" a plant refers to taking an established plant with multiple crowns/stems and dividing it into multiple pots. That way, each new plant will grow and fill up its own pot.
