"A Time to Kill" is about a black man from the South, whose child is raped by 2 white men. He goes out and kills the two men and is tried, and eventually acquitted on murder charges.

John Grisham's first novel centers around a young, southern lawyer who is defending a man who killed his daughter's rapists. The rapists are white and drug-addicted. The killer is a decorated, black, Vietnam vet. His vigilante justice is cheered by the community, but of course must be prosecuted. Of his early novels, Grisham chose this as his favorite.
