Perinatologist (specialist in maternal-fetal medicine) is basically an OB/GYN physician who provides care to pregnant women with high risk pregnancy. Perinatologist specializes in taking care of women with potential complications or risks to fetus, pregnancy itself, or placenta. His patients may include pregnant women with multiple gestation, preeclampsia, and more.

Perinatologists are obstetricians who had further training in feto-maternal medicine and high-risk pregnancies. They are capable of assessing and diagnosing complicated diseases affecting the baby while still in the uterus. Enquire your regular doctor on why the consult was made and get as much information as required.
