Noob is shorthand for Newbie. Other variations are: newb, n00b and nub. Newbie refers to an inexperienced person and most times is used in a teasing manner. Trivia: The term "newbie" actually originated in the Vietnam war referring to newly arrived soldiers in the field. It became popular again in the 1980's with the advent of the internet.

Noob is a shortened form of newb which in turn is a shortened form of newbie. The word noob is now in common usage among videogame enthusiasts and refers to someone who is inexperienced.

A noob is a term used typically computer forum users to describe people who are new to a computer forum. People who are new to a forum do not know how the rules are enforced and who the "big men on campus" are within the forum.

In general internet terms, a noob is just another name a 'newbie'. Which in reality just refers to a person that is new to a place, job, chat room, etc. It has been transferred over heavily to the 'non'-internet language that we seems to have adopted, but retains the same general meaning.
