A mainframe is a high performance computer that does large-scale computing. The original mainframes were housed in room-sized metal frames, which is probably where the name derives from.

A Mainframe is a huge computer that has a ton of processors and memory. Mainframes allow people to login to the mainframe using dummy terminals.
