Avast! Home Edition is a really good antivirus and it's free. Avira AntiVir is another valid alternative but it shows advertisements to upgrade from time to time that can get annoying.

Avast is great! (Avast. com) Very unobtrusive, and when it catches something you know it (can you say "audible alarm? "). Highly recommended.
