You're generally safe with something that goes along with one of his interests without becoming too personal or indicating a desire for more than friendship. For instance, if he enjoys wine, then a good gift would be a bottle of wine, but not two wine glasses. If he likes food, buy a gourmet gift basket, but stay away from aphrodisiacs.

Choose something practical and perhaps monogrammed: depending on his style and interests, go for a nice multi-tool or swiss Army knifea small piece of luggage (lap top case, for instance) wallet, money clip, or sports team oriented gear.

A nice gift for a man might be a nice pen and pencil set as they are not expensive and express no more expression than friendship.

Sunglasses are a good gift, because they are sensible and it is nice to have several pairs. An itunes gift card is a good gift if he loves music.

A bottle of cologne always works for a guy. It smells nice and it speaks volumes to him that you cherish his friendship and that it would be special when he puts it on. He will be reminded of you.
