Eighteen to Twenty-Four inches works well. The most important thing to remember is to install the pipe so that is has a slight downward slope towards your discharge point.

generally a depth of eight to twleve inches is usually an adequate depth. More important is the the grading in the trench, completely flat and it won't drain.

Usually digging about 12 to 18 inches in depth and about 6 inches in width is considered to be good enough for french drain.

The trench for the drain six inches wide and ten to twelve inches deep. Make sure to take note of the slope for the water to drain properly.
