I prefer to clean my dishwasher with natural cleaners instead of with harsh chemicals cleaners you can buy at the store. A solution of vinegar and lemon juice can do the trick. There are many places online to find home made solutions.

The best way to clean your dishwasher is to scrub around the rubber seal with a small brush and hot, soapy water. Then use a sponge and hot, soapy water to scrub the inside of the dishwasher. Finally, put a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run the otherwise empty dishwasher through a cycle using hot water.

I would try running it with baking soda and water. Baking soda cleans really well and it also will freshen it up as it cleans. You may even be able to use bleach and run it to clean it. For the bleach I would be careful. You will want to protect yourself accordingly if you choose to do so.
