What is a good diabetic cardiac diet?

I need foods good for both diabetes and heart conditions.

Answer by  lif0a0 (25)

A good diet for someone with both diabetes and cardiac problems can be found at the American Heart Association site and search for the Healthy Heart Diet. Simple sugars need to be eliminated and do not add any table salt. Fresh produce is great and lots of low fat protein.

You may want to look into the Dean Ornish/Life Choice diet. It's a vegetarian diet that is very low-fat and low-cholesterol, and while it isn't specifically diabetic, it could be customized to meet diabetic restrictions.

Look for foods that are low in fat, salt, and processed sugars. Whole grains and fresh vegetables should form the cornerstone of your diet.

You need to include foods high in fiber like vegetables with peels, fruits and whole grains. Stay away from cakes, pie, cookies and salty snacks. Specifically, kidney beans, oats, blueberries, pumpkin, tomatoes, soybeans, nuts and olive oil are great for you.

You should avoid fats as much as possible, and eat more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Olive oil is better than butter and fresh fish is preferable to meat. In general terms, the mediterranean diet is the best for your health and, more specifically, for cardiac problems.

You should always check with your physician or nutritionist first. Some medications react with certain foods. Eat lean meat. Stay away from too much red meat. Fish and poultry are good. You should not eat fried foods, instead try grilling, baking or broiling. Eat whole grain products and limit corn and potatoes. Canned and frozen foods are high in salt.
