A GFI or ground fault interupter is used to limit the amount of current in the event of a groundfault condition.
Answer by amber83 (9)
It is a Ground Fault Interrupter outlet(plug). It is simply a outlet that detects a line-to-ground fault current. By doing this it will protect equipment or persons from damage.
