What is a Freemason?

I've read a lot of different things, so different that it sounds like a variety of organizations rather than one.

Freemasonry is an old fraternal organization which served as a philosophical/social since before the American Revolution. Freemasons are notable for supporting democratic ideals and adhering to the belief that all Masons are equal. The reason they are called freemasons is that their imagery includes the idea of the Mason's "level", which, again, is tied to their democratic ideal.
