It's a secondary ceiling, pendent from the main (structural) ceiling. it's used to cover the electical cables or air conditioning. you can insert lighting too.

A drop ceiling is a ceiling that has an effect in your room. It basically just looks nicer. It makes more of a presence than a flat ceiling. A flat ceiling has no shape, whereas the drop ceiling comes down to the center of the room, which looks elaborate and elegant.

A drop ceiling has the removable square tiles in it. You may want one if you need access to the plumbing and electrical in the cieling like in a basement.
