A diphthong is a linguistic term which means literally "two sounds". It is used to denote a vowel sound that starts with one vowel and then slides into a second vowel. The two sounds remain as one syllable, though, since they are run together. Examples are very common such as coin, house, sign.

A diphtong usually is a pair of vocal sounds which are pronounced with the same emission of breathe when speaking a language. This vocal sound is usually given by voicing two or more vowels which occur together in the same syllable of a word. The two vowels have different intonation according to their position within the diphtong.
