It depends on where you live. In Minnesota for instance, it is defined as causing physical injury to a police officer, fireman, or EMT. In Oregon, it's causing physical injury by "Intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causes physical injury to another". Colorado, on the other hand, has no 4th degree assault statute.

4th degree assault is a misdemeanor. and is also referred to as simple assault. A person can be charged with 4th degree assault even if the assault is minor and there are no visible injuries.
