Four part harmony is just like playing a four note chord on the piano or the guitar. There is a first tenor, a second tenor, a baritone and a bass singer (if you are referring to men). These four voices combine to create what is known as four part harmony because they sing four separate parts at the same time.

It's the process of having four instruments play simultaneously, each handling a single note, usually different from the others. That way, the ensemble can play full chords.
