The Palace of Versailles was the residence of the last three absolute monarchs in France. From the 19th century on, it has served more as a museum than as a residence. Notably, two peace treaties between France and Germany have been signed there, one in 1877 and another in 1914.

The Palace of Versailles, located just outside Paris, has played an important role in history in several different eras. Louis XIV moved his court to Versailles in 1682 and the French royal family resided there until the French Revolution in 1789. The treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919 ended World War I. The palace is currently a tourist attraction.

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in order to end World War I. It was extremely harsh in its punishment of Germany for its actions during World War I and led to great distrust and anger. Many blame its harsh punishment for contributing to the remilitarization of Germany and the ultimate rise of Adolf Hitler to power.
