What happens to people who kidnap their own children?

The Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act (1980) requires all states to respect the custody orders of any other state. A parent who takes a child is punished in state court for the act of violating the custody order. The punishment is not severe like it is in criminal kidnapping cases.

Yes, and it happens quite often. The legal consequences are determined by the State that the kidnapping occurred in, and it will result in a felony charge.
