What happens if you cut mums back completely in the summer?

I misunderstood my husband's instructions and cut the mums the ground. No green left at all. Will they come back in the fall?

Well you can cut them and they will grow back properly. Just fertilize them a bit and water them according to your regular water patterns. This will help you restore them to their full condition and don't worry, they will grow back but it will take some time for the green to return.

They probably will not come back until next year. The plant needs time to grow and you have eliminated all the buds that would normally open in the fall. I would leave it alone and it should come back next year just fine. Careful with those pruning shears!

It's possible that they will return if you continue to water. Mums are pretty hardy! Look for "soft growth" (new little leaves at the bottom).

They may or may not come back in the fall; at least they may not bloom. They should be cut back early in the year. In the future, cut them only four to six inches above ground. Keep them trimmed, as long as they do not have buds or are not blooming. Stop trimming around July 4th.
