During gallstone removal the surgeon will insert tools through three small incisions on your belly. Your abdominal cavity will be pumped full of air to make room for the surgeons to work. Occasionally surgeons will have to switch to an open procedure though it is not common. They will remove the organ and close you up.

Most gallstone surgery these days is done laparoscopically with small incision and cameras so that they don't have to do a big incision with long healing times. During the sugery they disect off the gallbladder from the liver and then clip off the vasculature supply and the common bile duct with staples. Then the gallbladder is removed.

A lighted scope is attached to a video camera and it's inserted into the incision near the navel. A video monitor's used to guide the surgeon inserting the instruments through the other two incisions.

Gallstone surgery could be done via two ways, either keyhole surgery or open surgery. During keyhole surgery 3 small incision will be made and a camera will be inserted. The gall bladder will be then removed by incision. During open surgery, however a large cut will be made and gall bladder then removed. Keyhole surgery offers faster recovery process.
