During an amniocentesis, a long needle is inserted through the abdominal wall into the amniotic sac. Ultrasound imaging is often used to guide the needle. A small amount of fluid is removed from the amniotic sac and tested for various birth defects, such as spina bifida, infection, or chromosomal abnormalities.

The doctor will stick a large needle into your abdomen. The needle is used to collect some amniotic fluids from the amniotic sac. This is the most accurate form of testing in fetuses but don't get one unless you really need to. There is a small chance of miscarriage.

The doctor or sonographer will use an ultrasound probe on your belly to determine the position of the baby and the amniotic sac. While keeping the ultrasound visible, the person doing the test will insert a long needle into the amniotic sac and remove some fluid. This fluid will be tested to look for a variety of conditions.
