One option would be to stick with a neutral pallete. Tan, Cream and Ivory would work for other furniture. A few pieces in Red, Burgundy or Grape might give some color and are easily changed out later.

For a really modern look, red and white go well with a black couch. Decorators always say that a tiny bit of red is needed in every room. So why not choose an off white carpet, white/black window decor and white/black/red throw pillows on the couch.
