Experts disagree about this. In general though, poultry and milk are said to promote sleep, and so are carbohydrates such as pasta, rice, and bread. Big meals make you sleepy, but certain foods, like coffee, tea, and chocolate, promote wakefulness. Alcohol may make you sleep at first, but it ultimately spoils sleep.

The most important characteristic of food that makes me sleepy is the quantity, not the variety. When I eat a large portion of almost anything, it generally tires me out. Sugary foods seem exempt because of the impact of sugar - but this effect usually wears off pretty quickly.

Any food that is high on the Glycemic Index will raise your sugar levels and make you sleepy. If you want to stay awake, stay away from breads, pastas, instant rice, and even most dairy products.
