Well WEP stands Wired Equivalent Privacy. The key refers to the password value need in order to access the network. WEP is a standard of encryption introduced in order to make a wireless connection as secure as a wired on. When activated anyone who wants to use the connection must input a key generated by the router.

WEP is a wireless internet (wifi) security standard that used to be secure. Its not considered insecure. WPA and WPA2 have largely replaced WEP now.
