What does the word "emirates" mean?

"Emir" is an Arabic word which can be translated either as "commander" or "prince." An emirate is a nation that is ruled by an emir. The closest translation in English is "principality", the name for a state ruled by a prince. The word is now usually associated with the United Arab Emirates, which is a federation of seven states.
