It will show the overall health of the liver, without having to remove an actual piece of it. A healthy liver produces many different enzymes at a predictable level, so if the concentration is too low, that indicates a problem with the liver that needs to be examined.

Enzymes or proteins are detected by a blood test. Enzymes are located throughout the body; however, injury may cause them to spill into the blood. Elevated enzymes may indicate injury or damage to the liver. The liver enzyme blood test does not indicate the function of the liver.
