It means that their aren't any more Mayan's around to continue it. They could only make so far into the future. If their civilization hadn't collapsed there would be more.
The end of the Mayan calendar means the start of a new cycle of years, just as it does for other calendars. Some people believe that this time will be an end of conventional history as well.
