The term refers to there being no fetus in the birthing sac. This occurs during a miscarriage, and can be very traumatic for all involved, not just the mother. Fathers are expected to be strong emotionaly for their wives during this time, but should allow themselves the grieving process too.

An ultra sound finding of no fetal pole can be a sign of miscarriage. This is called a blighted ovum. It means a gestational sac develops but the baby never develops.

Depending on how far along you are in the pregnancy it would mean that the pregnancy is not viable. You should be able to see the fetal pole around five to six weeks of pregnancy.

A fetal pole is one of the first signs you would see on an ultrasound in a pregnancy, usually between 5-6 weeks. If there is no fetal pole yet, then either the embryo has not developed that much or you are dealing with a pregnancy which is not viable. Your doctor can give you more information.
