What does it mean when someone says they are on their soapbox?

My sister uses this phrase all the time and I have no idea what she is talking about.

It usually means they are going on and on about something that they feel strongly about, but that sometimes sounds preachy when they talk about it.

People who are on their soapbox are those who are lecturing other people and trying to win them over to their side at the best and at the worst are just pontificating on an issues. The term comes England where people at Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park would use soapboxes to stand over their audience.
