What does it mean when dense fibrous tissue shows up on a mammogram?

That there are fibers in the breast, possibly a cyst however it is not cancerous. These bumps can be felt and be quite the concern and scare women however they are not cancerous.

This indicates an area of concern in the breast. Tumors are made up of dense tissue, but tumors can be benign, cancerous or can simply be fat, cysts or just dense tissue. In any case this would be reason enough to do a repeat mammogram, a thermagram or possibly a needle biopsy.

There is a condition called fibrocystic breast disease inwhich dense fibrous cysts develop in the breast tissue. The cysts can vary in size but are usually round and plyable. The can grow or shrink dependent upon hormones and caffiene intake. Only a doctor can diagnose this condition and sometimes an ultrasound is needed to rule out other conditions.

A dense fibrous tissue could be due to the tumour or malignant cancer. A tissue biopsy is needed to establish the nature.

It is a normal finding. Women have different densities of their breasts. The only thing is that mammograms are harder to interprete in these women.
