What does it mean if a dog gives you his paw and then growls?

If the dog laid his or her paw on you (not as a command from you) then this is a clear cut issue of domination and agression that is unacceptable and should be dealt with swiftly. If, however, the paw was given on command, you should thoroughly check the paw for an injury that may be causing pain.

We have raised so many dogs. I would recommend that you back up and give him space. For some reason when this is happening he is feeling threated. Dogs react in the now. So if afraid now, they are going to growl. It takes a long time to make a bond with a dog. Also let him know your the leader!

It can mean his paw hurts or he wants to be played with. Try playing with him and see if it makes him stop for a bit.

It depends whether it is a happy growl or an angry growl. Some dogs growl as a form of communication. It is usually easy to tell the difference. If your dog is growling aggressively, do not give him the treat until he does it without growling.

It would appear to mean that the dog doesn't trust you afterall and that possibly he could be in pain from stretching his leg out. Either way, a growling dog should be backed away from.

An unusual combination. I would assume the dog wanted attention but had a sore paw, only realizing that it hurt once it was touched. If it's a playful growl, he probably wants to play.

It probably means that either you or a past owner or maybe even a friend has taught him the "Paw" trick, therefore when he gives you his paw he probably expects a treat or praise. If you are not giving him his rewarded he probably feels cheated hence he growls.
