You usually see how many babies there are. You see the heartbeat and limbs. You usually will not be able to find the sex of the baby until you are closer to 16 weeks.

Early ultrasounds are mainly used for dating how old the fetus is. The heartbeat can be seen starting between 6-8 weeks. The sex can not be determined via ultrasound until around 14 weeks. The early ultrasound can also be used to determine the number of babies (if there are twins, etc.)

Early you can see the sac, fetal pole and eventually the heart beat. You can't tell the sex until later, usually sometimes between 16 and 22 weeks.

Typically in the early weeks of pregnancy, the doctors are trained to be able to look at an ultrasound and detect a pregnancy. Many doctors won't give the ultrasound until 12 weeks into the pregnancy, and the sex of the baby is detected at a 20-week appointment.
