Compartmentalizing is taking the emotions you feel about a certain part of your life, for example your marriage, and putting them to the side so that you can effectively deal with the emotions associated with your job. It means having the ability to deal with emotions at appropriate times and not letting them interfere with the rest of your life.

Compartmentalizing means a person behaves dramatically differently in various situations, for instance, adopting one set of apparent values & language & dress & ways of interacting at work, and an entirely contrasting, even contradictory, set with friends on the weekend. The person may or may not know he's doing it.
