In blood, cancer messes up cell counts badly, and that is what they look at when examining blood for cancer. Normally there will be a low white blood cell count in cancer patients. White blood cells help the body fight infections and are very important. A high red blood cell count can also indicate cancer.

Cancer of the blood affects either the red blood cells or white blood cells. Blood work tests the levels and allows the doctor to evaluate the extent of your disease.
