The crescent moon looks like the smile of the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland; if his head were turned sideways his dimples would face away from the sun. Since the moon has 8 phases over a 29.5 day period a little bit more of the moon can be seen everyday.

A waxing crescent moon has a sicle shape like a banana. They tend to last a few days. The moon as it orbits around the earth is seen in various stages.
