A production coordinator is generally in charge of facilitating the efforts between the items that are sold and scheduling them to be made. Usually the coordinator will be in charge of scheduling manufacturing to ensure items are ontime, working with purchasing to acquire needed materials and sometimes scheduling production personnel.

Production coordinators essentially make sure that work keeps happening without any interruptions. This includes making sure there are sufficient supplies, people or contractors available to fix machinery, and enough people around to work. In large operations, they will coordinate departments responsible for each of these areas (purchasing, maintenance and human resources and scheduling).

A production coordinator can "wear many hats" from logistics, material planning, production scheduling, process controlling, to shipping. They may also be involved in supervision to some degree. The production coordinator must evaluate material needs for a business, understand customer requirements, and advise the business of what processes need to be executed and by what deadlines.

A production coordinator ensures all work stations have the necessary supplies (wire, ties, glue, paint) as well as the items they are supposed to assemble or build. They will call repair if something breaks. They may have work certifications updated for employees.
