The Inca civilization was founded by the legendary Sapa Inca during the 12th century. It developed into an empire during the next few centuries, until it was destroyed by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1533. It had a sophisticated network of roads which covered most of present-day Peru, Equador, Bolivia, and northern Chile. They had no known written language.
