What do snakes have to do with Pentecostal beliefs?

Or is that a myth?

The practice began early in the 20th century in Appalachia, mostly in coal mining towns. Only a small number of churches followed the literal meaning of Mark 16:17-18 which in part states "They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

There are some groups, including some Pentecostals, Baptists and others, which believe that handling poisonous snakes without ill effect is a proof of their faith. Many of these groups are found in the southern USA, but not exclusively. Most mainstream Pentecostals would not identify snake handling as a legitimate part of their beliefs.

Not all Pentecostals believe in snake handling. I have never handled a snake in my life.
