Quality marks stamped in metal (usually jewelry) denotes the percentage of pure metal (gold, silver or platinum) combined with other metals for durability or as a "filler." Different metals have different marking systems. Gold marked with 18K, for instance, is 75% gold. Sterling silver is marked 925, for 92.5% silver.

Actually i may answer about metal quality mark for silver and gold. So they mean how pure that metal is. Does it contain any other metal which is not so precious or something else in it. So for gold the best quality in some European countries is 585. But everytime you must know which is the best!

Those marks symbolize the amount or percentage of pure metal that is used in making the product. It also represents the quality of the metal and lets you know if there is more metal or another filler that is used in the product, it helps you choose better quality items.

Marks on metal objects that denote the composition of the metal used. These are usually expressed in numerical form, such as a fraction or decimal. For example 24 carat gold would be 24/24 for pure gold and anything consisting of less real gold would be a fraction of 24,i.e. 15/24.

The quality marks are used to identify the metal and its density and strength qualities. From what I understand they are coded by the companies usually as a way for that company to determine the quality they are producing

Metal quality marks are used to designate the chemical makeup of the material. For example, they can mark the quality of the gold or silver, or indicate rolled gold or electroplating.

They're for quality control. A lot of metal is tested for strength, especially used in things that need the metal to hold strong. Basically the marks mean it passed testing.
